Ian Watmore, Head of e-Government Unit / Government CIO

The appointment of Ian Watmore as the new Head of e-Government demonstrates the Government’s intent to encourage and exploit the use of information technologies to provide better, more efficient public services.

In this presentation to the Elite Group, Mr. Watmore will discuss what he believes are the principal challenges that need to be addressed in responding to this remit, and the priorities that he sees emerging.”

Speakers Profile

Ian Watmore joined the eGovernment Unit in September 2004, coming from management consultants Accenture, where he was UK Managing Director. Having joined Accenture in 1980, Ian became a Partner in 1990 and was elected UK Managing Director in 2000.

He has worked in both the public and private sectors, mainly in the UK and Ireland but with spells in South Africa, New Zealand, United States and mainland Europe.

Ian is a past President of the Management Consultants Association, Chairs the IT Industry Board of eSkills UK (the Sector Skills Council for IT and Telecommunications). In a personal capacity he is on the Board of the English Institute for Sport, a Lottery funded institute focused on serving high performance athletes in preparation for Olympic and other major sporting events.

David Clarke - Chief Executive of The British Computer Society

Prior to joining the BCS, David Clarke was head of Trinity Mirror’s Digital Media Division from April 1999 Trinity Mirror is the UK’s largest newspaper group, in order to develop a large scale UK digital media business which would become one of the UK’s top 5 internet portals by 2003.

Before joining the Mirror Group, David headed up Virgin Group’s internet activities, including the development of internet trading for many of the Virgin retail businesses, and the ISP Virgin Net. During this time Virgin Net made the almost impossible dual achievement of winning the UK ISP of the Year award two years running whilst at the same time becoming profitable in its own right.

Prior to his time with Virgin, David had spent the previous eighteen years in increasingly senior marketing and sales roles in global technology companies.

He is viewed as both one of the technology industry’s leading marketing figures, and one of its leading public speakers, and is widely sought after as a speaker at industry events.
