Incoming Chairman's message
David TideyAs the newly elected Chair of ELITE I am delighted to welcome you to the second edition of this newsletter. Firstly, I would like to thank Ben Booth for all his hard work as the previous Chair. We are fortunate that his skills and experience are still available to the committee as he has been elected to the position of Vice-Chair. Roger Ellis has been re-elected to the position of Treasurer and Bryan Mills re-elected as membership secretary. James McCafferty (one of our new committee members) has been elected as secretary.

I am confident that BCS ELITE will continue to go from strength to strength, seen as one of the most influential groups in UK IT. We have a number of interesting and high profile events in the pipeline, overseen by committee member David Ferguson. The committee will continue to forge links with other key players in the IT field and represent the views of senior IT professionals.

Just a word about my background. I am head of information systems at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, a London local authority, a position I have held for seven years. I've been a member of the BCS for over fifteen years.

Professionalism: Professionalizing IT
Everyone in today's world would take it for granted that occupations generally understood to be professionals, such as doctors, nurses, architects, lawyers, accountants and teachers are regulated either by professional bodies - what about IT?

Social inclusion: Does your website pass?
Paul Crichton MBCS, a member of the BCS Disability Group Committee, looks at PAS 78 and its implications for web design and social inclusion. A recent DRC consultation discovered that there was a high awareness of web accessibility as an important issue: 98 per cent of large organizations and 69 per cent of small and medium organizations. Yet 81 per cent of websites fail the most basic accessibility criteria.

Security: Ransomeware - is encryption a friend or foe?
Hackers, and in particular organized crime groups, are now of the firm realization that rather than just causing disruption, there is a great deal of money to be made from cybercrime. Brian Contos of ArcSight looks at the constant battle for IT security departments to stay on top of all possible attacks and vulnerabilities.

Security: The need to quantify risk
Measuring the effectiveness of information security technologies is not as easy as taking a taxi ride and noting odometer readings, but it is a critical part of making the right decision about whether or not to make investments in your corporate IT infrastructure. Learn more here.

Give your IT workforce a sharper edge...without cutting into your bottom line
The BCS group membership scheme is growing and an increasing number of organizations are seeing the benefits of belonging to the industry body for IT professionals. Joining the BCS group membership scheme will demonstrate that your organization is committed to raising professionalism and the development of IT as a profession, which is vital as customers and suppliers are increasingly requiring proof of IT professionalism. Through the scheme your IT team will be able to take full advantage of BCS membership benefits including access to industry-recognized professional development using our SFIAplus3, Information Systems Exam Board (ISEB) and professional development products.

By participating in the BCS group membership scheme your organization will gain 'trusted source' status and receive dedicated account management to ensure your scheme is a success.

Is your IT department a best place to work?
Does your organization's IT department enjoy a positive working environment? Does it encourage continued professional development and effective work-life balance?

If yes we would like to encourage you to enter for Computer Weekly's 'Best Place to Work in IT Awards 2007' launched this week. The Awards seek out and highlight best employment practice in IT departments to help raise IT standards across the board.

You would be eligible to enter the category for not-for-profit organizations.

Entry is straightforward, free of charge, and online via www.computerweekly.com/bestplacestowork

Finalists in all of the previous three years Awards report that their success has raised their IT department's profile internally and externally, helped boost staff motivation and retention, and helped with attracting and recruiting talented people who want to work in a good working environment.

The deadline for entries is 3 November 2006, with winners receiving their awards on 2 March 2007 at a lunchtime ceremony at the Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel, Mayfair, London.
