The privacy conundrum
'We need to question the assumption that the imperative to share personal data can only be thought of in terms of catering to the needs of society rather than safeguarding the privacy or confidentiality of the individual,' said Professor Charles Raab, University of Edinburgh, the first of three speakers at a recent BCS Thought Leadership event in London.

Updated best practice portal
The Corporate IT Forum has re-launched its best practice portal with reduced prices for BCS Chartered Members and Fellows.

Course in company direction
The IoD / BCS Diploma in Company Direction covers the core issues faced by every director and those within functional areas for which they may not have had previous responsibility. Delivered by business experts, the programme aims to provide IT directors and aspiring IT professionals - both BCS members and non-members - with the leadership and strategic skills that are essential for effective board performance.

1 April - BCS/RSI Joint Lecture
'Information and Communication Technology in the Public Sector: Transformational or Another Unaffordable Expense?'

24 April - BCS President's Dinner
A key event in the IT profession's social calendar is the BCS President's dinner, hosted this year by President Rachel Burnett, with guest of honour Frank Gardner OBE, BBC security correspondent, and guest speaker Jilly Goolden, wine critic and journalist.

The dinner will celebrate the Society's role as the true representative body for the UK's dynamic IT profession and provides an excellent opportunity to entertain clients, meet up with friends and colleagues, to exchange views and experiences, or just to enjoy the lavish surroundings.

Individual places for BCS members are available at £99 (including VAT). Non-members may also book places at £150 (including VAT). Table bookings (10 places) are available at a cost of £1,500 (including VAT) and includes a single page advert in the dinner brochure.

IS Professionalism 2008 - a one day conference presenting the new IT profession
18 March, Congress Centre, London.

This one-day conference will showcase the outputs of NCC's community research programme in professionalism in information systems. It will provide delegates with an opportunity to fast track their knowledge and insight into what IS professionalism entails and how it can be achieved.

The conference agenda maps the 10 key themes of the programme which together provide an effective framework for corporate professionalism. The NCC IS Professionalism Executive Briefing which provides an overview and introduction to the key themes can be freely downloaded from the link above.
