New on the website

Onion Layers Insider threat
Last year provided plenty of news stories about lost laptops and CDs containing masses of personal data. Confidential data wasn't exposed by corporate systems being compromised by outsiders (foreign or otherwise) but by insiders doing dumb things, like sending unencrypted data in unregistered post.

Web 2.0: People not products
The social capabilities and dynamics of web 2.0 have created a shift to self-serve, with users expecting to find content easily and complete tasks on their own. Whatever a site's conversion goal, it's now about people rather than products or services that count.

Best kept secret in telecoms
Most service providers are doing it and have been doing it for some time. It's well known for causing anxiety and frustration in equal measure. The CIO's real role?
Is the CIO a contributor to, or recipient of, corporate strategy? This is the subject of an MBA dissertation study for Henley Management College. The study will look at the CIO's role in corporate strategy from both the CIO and CEO perspectives. It will look at the business – IT interface and whether it is one or two ways. This study will give some interesting insights into the current view of CIOs – are they a strategic member of the top team driving the direction of the business or a chief technology mechanic providing the tools? Participants are now being sought for this study – CEOs and CIOs from the same company are of particular interest as are CEOs in companies who do not have CIOs. All participants will receive a summary of the results of the study. For further information and/or to volunteer please contact Brian Johnson at cio@blendon2001.co.uk or on 020 8303 0939.
