eBCS ELITE - The British Computer Society

Chair's message

David Tidey Welcome to the summer edition of the BCS Elite newsletter.

The big news is the BCS Elite Gala dinner on 14 November at the Goldsmith's Hall in London. Our guest will be Scott McNealy, chairman and co-founder of Sun Microsystems. Scott will be receiving a Distinguished Fellowship from the BCS at the event as well as entertaining us with an after dinner speech. Invites have gone out, so book up early to avoid disappointment.

I would also like to draw your attention to the Computer Weekly 'Best Places to work in IT' awards. These take a slightly different look at the IT industry and allow us to show our 'softer' side!
Entries need to be in by 5 October.

David Tidey
Elite Chairman

Business/IT interface: Everyone needs standards
A lack of standardisation is fundamentally compromising the value of enterprise content management (ECM) investments and constraining the delivery of maximum corporate value, says Ben Richmond, CEO and founder of the Content Group.

Security: Betrayal of trust
Trust is fundamental to society, without trust, society could not function. In companies there has to be trust all round, employees trust their bosses and management trust their employees.

ELITE'S 25th Anniversary/BCS 50th Anniversary
14 November at Goldsmith's Hall, London. Guest of Honour: Mr Scott McNealy, chairman of the board and one of the four original founders of Sun Microsystems. This event is an opportunity to see and hear one of the leading figures in the evolution of the Internet over the past twenty years, and a renowned after-dinner speaker. It will be Elite's sole celebration of its 25-year history, as well as forming part of the BCS's 50th Anniversary celebration.

Get involved with gold
The BCS has begun a project to redefine the Chartered IT Professional standard, the gold standard for IT practitioners, to more closely meet the present-day needs of IT professionals and their employers. So we are looking for people with knowledge and experience of information management, security, programme and project management, supplier management, and service management to contribute to the planned publishing of the first release of the updated CITP standard in January 2008.

If you wish to be a part of this exciting and important work, or want to know more, please contact Malcolm Sillars, CITP programme manager at malcolm.sillars@hq.bcs.org.uk.

BCS ELITE Elections to the committee for 2007/8
We have four vacancies on the committee for the coming year. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the work of ELITE, and I urge anyone who wants to become involved to put themselves forward for election. Any member of the Elite Group who is also a member of BCS can be nominated to stand for the position of Committee member. A proposer and a seconder will be required for the nomination to be entered into the election process.

If you would like to stand, then please email a profile and photograph of yourself, no longer than 25 lines plus the names of your proposer and seconder to mandy.bauer@hq.bcs.org.uk by 17 August.

Exclusive best practice portal
BCS has partnered with the Corporate IT Forum (tif.) to provide chartered members and chartered fellows with exclusive access to unique best practice guidance and information on the adoption and implementation of IT.

New course in company direction
The IoD / BCS Diploma in Company Direction covers the core issues faced by every director and those within functional areas for which they may not have had previous responsibility. Delivered by business experts, the programme aims to provide IT directors and aspiring IT professionals - both BCS members and non-members - with the leadership and strategic skills that are essential for effective board performance.
